The only time I tasted this slad was in Chrysopigi in Crete, made by the lady cooks of the village with a few simple ingredients and their amazing Olive Oil. It was really a great salad!!


(amounts of ingredients I leave to your liking)

Smoked herring

Fresh artichokes peeled cleaned and dressed with lemon juice

Boiled tomatoes



Fresh parsley

Extra virgin olive oil

Lemon juice

Salt and pepper


First cut all ingredients to bite size pieces

Crush the potatoes with a fork so they can suck up all the salad juices

Burn the skin of the smoked herring over a fire flame (don’t burn the house down) do it over a gaz plate flame

Skin the herring, remove all bones and head and cut to pieces

Mix all ingredients together and dress it generously with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper
