I can confidently declare it as the epitome of breakfast perfection – the Best Breakfast Ever. This delectable meal not only tantalizes your taste buds but also nourishes your body with its wholesome and nutritious ingredients. I had the pleasure of savoring this culinary masterpiece while filming for Savor Greece in the charming village of Hamezi, nestled in the picturesque island of Crete.

Milking the goat

Amidst a plethora of tantalizing treats, a delightful surprise awaited me in the form of a charming little goat. A young boy skillfully milked the goat, collecting a bucket of fresh, velvety milk. The milk, with its alluring aroma, was poured into a pot and brought to a gentle boil, releasing its heavenly essence – a true delight for aficionados of goat’s milk.

Meanwhile, in another pot, a bed of coarse boiled bulgur awaited its transformation. Known as “Hontro” in Crete, this cracked wheat provided a textured and hearty alternative to mundane breakfast cereals. It surpassed all expectations, elevating the breakfast experience to new heights.

The next step involved pouring the steaming hot goat’s milk over the waiting “Hontro,” merging the two in a harmonious union. The gentle mixing of the ingredients ensured a perfect blend, as flavors melded and textures intertwined, creating a symphony of taste and satisfaction.
